Everything you should ask when touring wedding & event venues!
Hi! I am Elizabeth Jones, wedding planner & event coordinator, here to help you every step of the way along your wedding planning journey!
The venue... the place where you say "I do"! It is such a huge part of your wedding and there are many factors at play when choosing your venue. Do you love the outdoors? Do you want a blank space that allows you to create your vision? Are you in love with the big cities? Do you want your location to hold sentimental value from your past? The options here are endless.
Choosing your venue is one of the most important decisions you will make when planning the best day of your life. To help ease this process for you, I have created a Wedding & Event Venue Checklist (and it's free!) Whether you are getting married in your childhood home or an elaborate venue, this checklist can help you see all of the factors that might be necessary to create the event that you are envisioning.
Consider These Factors
Location... do you want a destination wedding? Do you have elderly family members or friends that may not be able to fly or drive for long periods at a time?
Capacity.... do you wish to have a large event, or a micro wedding? All venues have a max capacity for inside the space and for parking.
Style.... indoor, outdoor, barn, house, city building, hotel ballroom, park, river, cabin.... so many options. Decide what feels the most like "home" to you and your partner.
Before You Take A Tour
There are a few steps you should take before scheduling a venue tour:
Decide on a budget.
Draft a guest list to know a rough estimate of how many guests you will have attending.
Choose the season and the year you would like to have your wedding, so you can know what availability your venue needs to have.
Research venues in the area and check for pricing, max capacity, and availability.
While Touring
Print out the Wedding & Event Venue Checklist to bring with you on your venue tour. Check off each box that applies and make comments of what you are seeing and feeling. Ask questions and go through the entire questionnaire so you know exactly what the venue has to offer.
If you like what you see and hear, visualize the venue as if it is your wedding day. Does it allow you to create your ideal event? Take photos of the space to look back on and show your friends and family.
Post Venue Tours
Read through your checklist, comments, and photos. Before making any decisions or signing a contract, be sure that this is the space for you and your partner. Does it feel right to you? Does it include everything you are wanting?
I recommend touring multiple venues that fit your criteria and reflecting on each after touring. Rate the venues 1-10 and keep searching until you find the right space.
Be thorough when looking for the place to host your most important day! You don't want to have venue-regret. Planning your wedding is such an important and special time in your life.
